Redding Woman Arrested for Assaulting Police Officers and Police K9

November 19, 2018             9:30 P.M.

On November 19th, at about 7:00 P.M., officers with the Redding Police Department were dispatched to the greenbelt area at Conifer Way and Victor Avenue. The Redding Fire Department was asking for assistance with contacting a violent transient who had started a camp fire in the dry brush and was refusing to extinguish it.

As officers approached, the female transient, identified as Julie Bishop, age 49 of Redding began throwing large river rocks at them. One K9 officer was struck in between the shoulder blades by one of the rocks. Officers utilized a less lethal weapon in an attempt to take Bishop safely into custody, but those attempts failed.   A police K9 was also utilized. During the apprehension, the suspect continued to violently resist; striking and kicking the K9 and officers.

Bishop was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, obstructing an officer with violence, and assaulting a police K9. Two police officers were transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries and released.  The K9 was unharmed.

Bishop was medically cleared for injuries sustained during the apprehension and booked into the Shasta County jail.
