Alleged thief nabbed by Police K9

February 9, 2019       5:45 P.M.

In the early morning hours of February 3rd, Officer McGinnis was conducting patrol checks in the area of Ellis Street and Polk Street. He heard banging noises coming from the Sonsrays Machinery yard. Officer McGinnis observed a subject inside the fenced yard in the cab of a pickup. The pickup was running. Officer McGinnis requested additional units, as it appeared the subject was in the process of attempting to steal the vehicle.  The subject noticed officers in the area and attempted to flee by climbing on to the roof of a nearby business.  He refused officer’s commands to surrender.

Officers utilized the U.A.V (unmanned aerial vehicle) to check the roof. It was determined that the suspect was potentially hiding inside another fenced yard to the south of the original business. With the assistance of K9 Njord, officers located the subject, Ryan Barrett, age 48 of Redding, hiding inside a vehicle in that yard. Barrett violently resisted arrest and was eventually taken into custody. It was determined that Barrett had illegally entered three separate business yards. The vehicle that Barrett was originally seen in had the door locks and ignition punched. There were no other subjects located.

After a medical clearance at a local hospital, Ryan Barrett was booked into the Shasta County jail for attempted vehicle theft, prowling, vandalism, and resisting arrest.
