Alleged bicycle thieves located and arrested in downtown Redding.
On March 1, 2019 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a female entered Sports, Ltd in North Redding and asked to test ride a Fit bicycle worth several hundred dollars. The employee noticed the female from earlier when she and a male were looking through the windows of the business at the same bike. The employee escorted the female outside and allowed her to test the bicycle. The male was no longer with the female. The female suspect then sped off on the bike toward Best Buy on Hilltop.
Another employee noticed the female stealing the bike and watched as she placed the bike in the bed of a pickup. The employee obtained the license plate and called the police. Officer Kuyper took the initial report but didn’t initially locate the suspect.
The license plate and description of the pickup led Officer Kuyper to an address on State Street in downtown Redding. He identified the male suspect as John Capelli, 28 years of Redding and his girlfriend as Monique Solorio, 30 years of Redding. Capelli and Solorio are both on probation.
On March 7, 2019 at approximately 9:00 a.m., Officer Kuyper and several other officers accomplished a probation search of Capelli’s residence. Officer Kuyper located the stolen bike and during a subsequent interview, obtained confessions from the suspects.
Capelli and Solorio were booked into the Shasta County Jail for possession of stolen property and probation violations. The use of social media was very helpful in resolving this investigation.
