On January 3rd, 2020, at 10:35 P.M., Redding Police officers were dispatched to a single vehicle traffic collision involving a vehicle into a boulder at Alta Mesa Drive and Rancho Road. The involved vehicle is described as a 2012 Kia Optima. Citizens reported the vehicle’s air bags had deployed, the vehicle was smoking, and they could not open the doors.
Redding Police arrived on-scene and ascertained the Kia Optima was not on fire but was smoking. An officer was able to open the Kia Optima’s door and found an unresponsive female driver who was pronounced deceased on-scene by medical personnel. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
There were no witnesses to the collision, but evidence suggests that the Kia Optima was traveling southbound on Alta Mesa Drive at a high rate of speed, failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Rancho Road, and collided head-on with boulders lining the south roadway edge of Rancho Rd.
The female driver was not wearing her seatbelt, the airbags of the Kia Optima were deployed, and there was major damage to the front of the vehicle. It is unknown if the female driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.
The Shasta County Coroner’s Office responded and made a preliminary identification of the female driver; however, her identity is being withheld pending confirmation and notification of her next of kin.
The intersection of Rancho Rd. and Alta Mesa Drive was temporarily closed to through traffic. The traffic investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this traffic collision is encouraged to contact the Redding Police Department at 530-225-4200.
