Case# 20R001777

On Wednesday, January 8th, 2020 at approximately 6:00 P.M., the Redding Police Department received calls regarding a possible gunshot victim at the Red Lion Inn and Suites, 536 East Cypress Avenue.  Callers reported observing a male victim being loaded into a vehicle bleeding from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen.  While officers were responding they learned a male gunshot victim had been dropped off at Mercy Hospital.  Officers arrived at both locations and began investigating the apparent shooting.

The victim, 39 year old Udom Chao of Redding, was found to have a through and through gunshot wound to both of his legs.  He is receiving medical treatment at Mercy Medical Center, his injuries are not life threatening.  Chao was not cooperative with officers and provided information which was later proven false by surveillance video.

Officers at the Red Lion Inn located the crime scene in a room on the north side of the motel.  A shell casing, projectile, blood, and marijuana were all located inside or just outside the door to one of the motel rooms.  Surveillance video revealed what appeared to be a marijuana related robbery that took place at the motel.  An African American male can be seen in the video pointing a handgun in the direction of the Asian males and walking out of the motel room carrying two large garbage bags.

The suspect can be seen on the video entering a vehicle and fleeing the scene.  The suspect is described as an African American male in his late thirties to early forties, wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes.  The vehicle he escaped in is a blue or gray 2011 Ford Fusion bearing California license plate 7UHH373.  The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, he should not be approached.

The investigation is ongoing, if you have any information regarding this incident please contact the Redding Police Department at (530)225-4200.
