On Marth 15th 2020, at 11:24 am, The Redding Police Department and Redding Fire Department were dispatched to a two vehicle traffic collision at the Intersection of North Market and Arboretum Drive. Officers learned Hanna McCuan, 20 years old of Redding, was driving northbound on North Market St. and using her cellular phone. She was unaware her light was red, and she ran the red light and struck a 2016 Kia sedan driven by Hannah Smith, 23 years old of Shasta Lake, who was making an eastbound turn from southbound North Market St. onto Arboretum Dr. McCuan attempted to avoid the collision by swerving, but was unable to. McCuan’s car, a 2010 Dodge sedan, went onto the east curb and struck a Redding Electric Utility power pole.

Smith sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Both parties were wearing their seatbelts and the airbags in their cars deployed. McCuan admitted to using her cellular device while driving. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in this collision. The collision is still under investigation and will be review by the Redding Police Traffic Unit for possible charges.

The Redding Police Department reminds drivers to NOT use any device that may distract them while operating a motor vehicle. Distracted driving is as dangerous as drunk driving.
