Injury Traffic Collision on Highway 273 at Westwood Avenue

May 15, 2020     7:00 pm

On Friday, May 15, 2020 at about 5 pm, Redding Police Department officers responded to Highway 273 and Westwood Avenue for a two vehicle roll-over traffic collision.

According to witness statements, a green Ford Mustang, driven by Rocky Mithcell, age 26 of Redding, was stopped eastbound on Westwood Avenue at Highway 273 for a red light.  When the light turned green, he accelerated rapidly while making a right-hand turn onto southbound Highway 273.  Mithcell lost control of his vehicle and entered the northbound lanes of Highway 273 after crossing through the center median.  Mithcell struck a silver Chrysler 300 traveling northbound on Highway 273 just south of the intersection.  The driver of the Chrysler was identified as Judy Haughs, age 7 7 of Redding.  The head-on collision caused the Ford Mustang to overturn.

Mithcell was transported to Shasta Regional Medical Center for major injuries.  Haughs was transported to Mercy Hospital for minor injuries.  Haughs was wearing her seatbelt.  It is unknown if Mithcell was wearing his seatbelt.  It does not appear that alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this collision.
