On Wednesday, June 17th, 2020 at approximately 4:30 P.M., Redding Police Officers responded to the 1800 Block of Winterwood Court in east Redding regarding a missing elderly male. Officers arrived and learned that 87 year old James Laperle had walked away from his residence and had been missing for over one hour. Laperle suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and other medical conditions that put him at risk.
Officers canvassed the area surrounding Laperle’s home extensively. A K9 track was attempted and numerous witnesses were contacted, but Laperle could not be located. A CodeRED community notification was launched to 7800 people within a mile of radius of Laperle’s residence.
At approximately 6:00 P.M., Sarah Lea Morrison and Claire Jean Creeks, both of Redding, spotted Laperle and recognized him as the missing subject from the CodeRED alert they received. They stopped and talked with him, confirmed his name, then contacted police. While waiting for officers, Morrison and Creeks provided water to Laperle and purchased him an ice cream from Dairy Queen.
Laperle was re-united with his family who were very grateful for his safe recovery.
