Solo Vehicle Collides into a Utility Pole in East Redding

NEWS RELEASE

 August 9th, 2020           2:15 P.M.

Case #20R049895

On August 9th, at 12:18 P.M., the Redding Police Department and Redding Fire Department responded to a solo vehicle traffic collision near the intersection of Hartnell Ave and School Street.  Officers learned Shawn Ireland, 38 years of Redding, was driving a 1996 Nissan Sentra northbound on School Street when he reportedly fell asleep.  The vehicle left the roadway and collided with a utility pole located in front of Redding Fire Station 5.

Ireland and the passenger in his vehicle, Robert Dominguez, 44 years of Redding, sustained minor injuries.  Dominguez was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.  Both occupants were wearing their seatbelts and airbags in the vehicle deployed.  Officers on scene evaluated Ireland at the scene, however drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision.

Damage to the utility pole caused cable lines to fall across Hartnell Avenue, initiating a brief closure of the roadway in that area.  The roadway is now clear.  The collision is under investigation and will be reviewed by the Redding Police Traffic Unit for possible charges.
