On September 14, 2020, at about 9:20 am., the Redding Police Department was contacted by a female reporting her husband, Thomas DALY, 59 years old of Redding, was missing.  She said Thomas decided to go camping on September 12, 2020, along the Sacramento River Trail to test some camping equipment. He later called his wife on September 13, 2020, and told her that he was okay, but had fallen and injured himself.

Officers immediately responded to the area and utilized off-road motorcycles and the Unmanned Ariel Vehicle (UAV) to search for Thomas along the trail. At approximately 2:30 pm., officers utilizing the UAV, observed a camp hidden amongst some tall vegetation along the south side of the Sacramento River Trail, about 1.5 miles west of Court Street. The camp was only visible from the air and could not be seen from foot, from either the trail or the river.

Officers located Thomas injured, dehydrated, and confused. They removed Thomas from the wooded area and brought him to awaiting medical personnel. Thomas was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was reunited with his wife.

These UAV’s were recently acquired by the Redding Police Department to assist in facilitating missions such as Search and Rescue, searching for criminal suspects, locating evidence, and other missions strictly regulated by department policy.
