Redding pedestrian struck by motor vehicle sustains major injuries

On Saturday, September 12th, 2020, at 1:15 A.M., Redding Police responded to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on State Route 273 north of Canyon Road.

Sarah Carpenter, 39 years of Redding, was driving her Honda Civic northbound on State Route 273, north of Canyon Road, when she struck Rachael Dayton, 25 years of Redding.  Carpenter did not see Dayton and her male companion as they were crossing the roadway outside of a crosswalk during darkness.  Following the collision, Carpenter stopped her vehicle to check on Dayton and wait for emergency services.

Rachael Dayton sustained major injuries and was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center for treatment and she is expected to survive.  Dayton was determined to be at fault for the collision for crossing the roadway outside of a crosswalk.

Sarah Carpenter was determined to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.  She was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail for felony DUI causing injury.  At the time of collision, Carpenter was wearing her safety belt and was not using her cellphone.  The Civic’s airbags did not deploy and the vehicle sustained moderated front end damage.

The Redding Police Department would like to remind citizens of the dangers of drinking and driving and encourages the use of sober drivers.  Additionally, always use crosswalks and well-lit areas to remain visible when crossing roadways during nighttime hours.
