NEWS RELEASE

 October 21st, 2020           2:10 P.M.

Case #20R069416

On October 21st, 2020 at approximately 10:12 A.M., Officers from the Redding Police Department responded to investigate a report of a male subject brandishing a knife in the area of the Dana to Downtown portion of the Sacramento River Trail.  Investigation revealed Scott Smith, 63 years of City of Shasta Lake, was walking his dog on the river trail and came upon Jon King, 30 years of Chico, walking two dogs the opposite direction on the trail.  The respective dogs began barking at each other, which led to a brief argument between Smith and King.  During the argument, King pulled out a knife and swung it at Smith, in an apparent attempt to stab Smith before fleeing the area.  Smith reported the incident and provided a description of the suspect.

Officers responded to various access points for the Sacramento River Trail.  At approximately 10:32 A.M., Officer Daniel Stewart observed King, who matched the suspect description, walking with two dogs on a trail near Hilltop Drive at Palisades Avenue.  King was detained and found to be in possession of a knife.  King admitted to his involvement in a disturbance with Smith, but denied attempting to assault him.

King, depicted in the photograph below, was booked into Shasta County Jail for Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Brandishing a Deadly Weapon.
