Press Release

October 4th, 2020              10:00 P.M.

On Sunday October 4th, 2020 at 1:57 P.M. Officers from the Redding Police department, the Redding Fire Department and CHP – Northern Division Air Operations responded to the area of the Sundial Bridge after receiving a report of a person floating in the water. Despite the heavily populated area, only one person reported seeing a man in the water.

Approximately 10 minutes later, the CHP helicopter arrived on scene and immediately located the man along the river bank down river from the Sundial Bridge. Redding Police officers and Redding Fire personnel were directed to the area where they contacted a man in his 40’s. He was lying motionless in the water, but was conscious and spoke to emergency personnel. Officers determined the man was suffering from a mental health episode.

Once the man was safely rescued from the river, officers took him to a local area hospital for treatment of exposure and a mental health evaluation. The Redding Police Department would like to remind people to use caution when around the Sacramento River. The frigid water can be unexpectedly swift which could easily lead to injury or death.
