On November 25th at approximately 1:45 A.M., Redding Police Officers Vega and Lovelady saw a 1967 Chevy Malibu being driven north on Pine Street with no headlights. The driver looked at the Officers and rapidly accelerated away from them. The Officers conducted a traffic stop and contacted the driver and sole occupant, Steven Schlapia, 56 years of Redding.
Schlapia was immediately hostile and resistant to commands from the Officers. Officers suspected he was stalling for unknown reasons. Schlapia ultimately complied and was removed from the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the vehicle by Officer Jaegel, a 9mm handgun was located between the front seats. The location was near Schlapia’s right hand, leaving the handgun readily accessible. The handgun had a loaded magazine and a round in the chamber.
Officers also located a methamphetamine smoking pipe and a loaded .22 caliber rifle with an attached, loaded magazine in the car. Another loaded magazine for this rifle was located on Schlapia’s person.
Schlapia is a convicted felon and therefore he is prohibited from possessing or owning firearms or ammunition. He was arrested on multiple new felony and a misdemeanor charges and booked into the Shasta County Jail.
